The IRS has announced tax relief for those impacted by Tropical Storm Ernesto in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This relief extends various tax filing and payment deadlines until February 3, 2025, giving affected individuals and businesses much-needed time to recover.
Key Details of the IRS Relief
The relief applies to all four islands of the U.S. Virgin Islands, covering tax-related deadlines that would have otherwise fallen between August 13, 2024, and February 3, 2025. This includes extensions for filing federal returns and making payments for individuals, businesses, and tax-exempt organizations.
Notably, the new February 3, 2025, deadline applies to:
- Individuals or businesses with a valid extension have to file their 2023 federal returns.
- Quarterly estimated income tax payments due on September 16, 2024, and January 15, 2025.
- Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns due on October 31, 2024, and January 31, 2025.
Penalties for late payroll and excise tax deposits due between August 13, 2024, and August 28, 2024, will also be abated, provided the deposits are made by August 28, 2024.
Automatic Filing and Payment Relief
The IRS automatically provides relief to taxpayers with an IRS address of record in the disaster area. There’s no need for these taxpayers to contact the IRS for relief. However, those who moved to the affected area after filing their return and face penalties should call the number on their IRS notice to request penalty abatement.
The IRS will also work with taxpayers whose records needed to meet deadlines are in the disaster area, even if they live outside it.
